NAIVASHA, KENYA | The Kenyan Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) is celebrating their team’s two-stroke triumph at the 2025 East and Central All Africa Challenge Trophy (EACAACT), a distinguished women’s golf tournament for East and Central African countries, which they hosted recently at the Great Rift Valley Lodge and Golf Resort (GRVL) in Naivasha.
Kenya concluded the event with a score of 17-over-par 443 after 54 holes of play, narrowly surpassing Réunion Island, which finished at 19-over-par 445, thereby achieving a remarkable performance on home turf. Réunion’s Melliyal Schmitt emerged victorious in the individual competition with a score of one-under-par 212.
The Kenyan contingent in the tournament included Joyce Wanjiru, 13-year-old Kanana Muthomi, and Mercy Nyanchama, who secured third, fourth, and fifth positions respectively on the individual leaderboard, proudly representing the host nation at this esteemed event.
Kenya commenced the championship with a nine-over-par 151, with contributions from Wanjiru and Muthomi towards the team’s score.
Wanjiru recorded a score of two-over-par 73, while Muthomi posted seven-over-par 78. Nyanchama returned a score of 79, with the two lowest scores being counted towards the team’s overall total for the round.
In the second round, the hosts achieved a score of one-under-par 141, again with contributions from Wanjiru and Muthomi. The latter recorded one-under-par 70, featuring three birdies and two bogeys, while Wanjiru made a level-par 71, which included six birdies and an equal number of bogeys. Nyanchama scored 78.
In the final round on Friday, Kenya concluded with another nine-over-par 151, with Nyanchama and Wanjiru contributing to the team’s final tally.
Nyanchama shot three-over-par 74, which included three birdies, three bogeys, and a triple bogey, while Wanjiru recorded a score of 77 with two birdies, two bogeys, and three double bogeys. Muthomi finished with a score of 79.
The 2025 EACAACT gathered elite female golfers from Madagascar, Réunion, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and the hosts Kenya.
Reunion finished runners up while Tanzania secured third place with a score of 34-over-par 460. On the individual leaderboard, Schmitt took the top position, with Tanzania’s Neema Olomi finishing as the runner-up with a score of seven-over-par 220, just one shot ahead of Wanjiru, who placed third.
